Almost all of us have, at one point or another, experienced the discomfort of a toothache. For some, it’s a passing experience, while others may discover that it’s an indication of serious problems ahead. The range of things that can cause your tooth to hurt may leave you worried if you’re experiencing one. We’re going to talk about toothaches and the range of things that are known to cause them. We’ll also try to indicate if a trip to your dentist is called for.

What Are Toothaches?

It would make sense to begin by explaining exactly what constitutes a toothache. Simply put, a toothache can be described as any pain or discomfort that occurs near or in a tooth. In some cases, this discomfort can be easily treated at home, while other cases will require the active involvement of a dental health care professional.

Why Do Toothaches Hurt So Much?

While on the outside, your tooth appears to be an immutable hard lump of enamel, it’s actually a hard shell around a much more tender interior. Beneath the enamel exterior can be found a porous layer called dentin, and beneath that can be found a pulp interior. The pulp is a gelatinous material comprised of nerves, blood vessels, and other tissues that feed the tooth and give it its sensitivity. Infections cause the pulp to become inflamed and can cause significant pain.

What Can Cause A Toothache?

There are a variety of conditions that can result in a toothache. One of the most common causes is tooth decay, often as a result of poor dental hygiene. That’s just the beginning though, other causes of tooth pain include:

  • Abscesses – This is the result of an infection getting into the pulp of the teeth.
  • Fractured teeth – Fractures are typically the result of some sort of trauma, such as a fall or traffic accident.
  • Impaired Fillings – Restorations such as fillings can fail over time, exposing the interior of the tooth resulting in pain.
  • Gum Disease – Advanced periodontal disease can result in a significant amount of pain from severe infection.
  • Erupting Teeth – If you have a new tooth coming in, you’re likely to experience a significant amount of dental pain. In some cases, such as wisdom teeth, these teeth will have to be removed.

These are just the most common reasons you may experience a toothache. The specifics of your toothache will be determined by your dentist, as well as the proper steps to take to treat it.
